Academiestraat - Ghent

Description

Construction of 4 different buildings with a total of 109 residential units, two commercial spaces, a multipurpose room and underground parking. The 4 structures - Figura, Saltare, Statua and Fibula - have a contemporary design and vary in size. Together, they form a mix of classic garden houses, multi-family houses and houses to grow with. he houses are complemented by 2 commercial spaces and a multifunctional space. All these functions are located along a new, semi-public inner street that functions as access and along which a succession of courtyards, squares, gardens and water features is organised. The residential project was carried out with respect for the character of the surroundings and the rich history of the buildings.

The new homes meet the requirements for passive houses. Furthermore, in terms of sustainability, green roofs, infiltration zones and a buffer basin to reduce the discharge of rainwater were used.

On the same site, two other contractors also renovated and repurposed the old fire station and the old academy.  The Academy site covers the entire building block between Academiestraat, Molenaarstraat, Brandweerstraat and Sint-Margrietstraat in Ghent city centre.

Willemen Construct came into being on 1 July 2018 as a result of the merger between Willemen General Contractor and the construction department of Kumpen.
