N499: Veldekens - Adegem

Repair of the N499 at Veldekens
Major road works were carried out at Veldekens, where the road service was in very poor condition. The new road provides greater driver comfort and less noise for residents. The cycle path right along the road has received a facelift. The cobblestones that previously separated the bike path from the road have been replaced by bushes, providing greater visual separation between the two.

Redevelopment of the 'Kruipuit'.
In addition, the Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV) has made the 'Kruipuit' visually simpler and safer to use. The feeder road from Zomergem has been narrowed, forcing cars to reduce speed, and making cyclists also more visible to car drivers.

To limit the nuisance as much as possible, the work was undertaken in three phases.

  • Phase 1 (23/02/2015 to start of April 2015): Veldekens: Schipdonk Canal to just before 'Kruipuit" intersection. The top asphalt layer was renewed on top of the concrete slabs. The road was completely closed. No through traffic was possible. Local traffic was diverted via Adegem and Zomergem.
  • Phase 2 (early April-late May): Veldekens: 'Kruipuit' intersection. The 'Kruipuit' intersection (Zomergem feeder road side) was relaid. The intersection was closed to all traffic. Local traffic was diverted.
  • Phase 3 (late May-early June): Veldekens: from just beyond the 'Kruipuit' to the boundary with Knesselare. Individual damaged concrete slabs were broken up and replaced. With the contractor occupying part of one lane, traffic alternated through the working zone with traffic lights.

Willemen Infra - the largest Belgian road construction company - came into being on 1 July 2018 as a result of the merger between Aswebo, Aannemingen Van Wellen and the infrastructure department of Kumpen.
