De Sterre - Ghent

De Sterre in Ghent is an important intersection at which many roads converge. Previously, bicyclists and motorised traffic were not separated and, furthermore, the applicable priority rules were unclear.

Consequently, this chaotic tangle was replaced by an elongated roundabout. Road users can now count on increased safety, a clearer view of traffic and a smoother flow of traffic. A bicycle and pedestrian tunnel in combination with separate two-way paths and central reservations offer extra safety to road users.

The difference between this elongated roundabout and a normal roundabout is that motorists must make a choice before they enter the roundabout concerning which exit they will take. Clear signalling and marking on, above or alongside the lane ensures that traffic is pre-sorted on time. Once on the roundabout, the road user cannot simply change lanes. This principle is derived from the turbo roundabout, and increases safety.

Willemen Infra - the largest Belgian road construction company - came into being on 1 July 2018 as a result of the merger between Aswebo, Aannemingen Van Wellen and the infrastructure department of Kumpen.
