Gasmeterlaan-Nieuwevaart - Ghent

Description

The Gasmeterlaan and Nieuwevaart are part of the northern section of the inner ring road around Ghent. They permit only one-way traffic, and are separated from each other by an intermediate strip of water. Traffic can switch to the Gasmeterlaan at the end of the Nieuwevaart via the Nieuwevaart bridge. It is this 1.7 kilometre section that Aswebo took in hand.

The Gasmeterlaan and the Nieuwevaart have two lanes each. On the Gasmeterlaan, three layers of asphalt have been milled off and relaid, and on the Nieuwevaart two layers. Structurally this was fairly standard work, though with new concrete shoulders on either side of the new asphalt road surface. The new asphalt is laid right up to these shoulders.

In addition to the roadway, Aswebo also tackled the pavements, bike paths and parking spaces. A new two-way bike path was also built. The new bike paths connect, via a new bicycle underpass under the Nieuwvaart bridge, with the bike paths along the N9 and the Elyzeese Velden. The underpath consists of a steel structure built along the bridge abutment, and resting on steel poles driven into the water.

The Nieuwevaart bridge also received a thorough facelift. In need of structural renovation, it was largely rebuilt. First, the deck joints, the paving and waterproofing surface were broken up, including the tram tracks of the Ghent-Wondelgem line. With the associated overhead power cables having to remain in place, all work had to be done with small-sized equipment.

Willemen Infra - the largest Belgian road construction company - came into being on 1 July 2018 as a result of the merger between Aswebo, Aannemingen Van Wellen and the infrastructure department of Kumpen.
