Intersection Cosmos - Zelzate

Description

The reconstruction of the ‘Cosmos’ intersection at Zelzate is part of the broader approach taken to the R4 East (ring road around Ghent). In this, all crossings are being systematically redeveloped in order to allow traffic to proceed safer and more smoothly.

In April 2013, redevelopment started of the signal-controlled ‘Cosmos’ intersection in Zelzate. The intersection of the R4 (J.F. Kennedylaan) with the southern on and off ramp Zelzate-East of the E34 (incl. access to the Rosteyne Industrial Park) and the N449 (Walderdonk - Wachtebeke) was converted into a raised roundabout with bicycle tunnels. At the same time, the E34 on and off ramp was redeveloped and a section of the R4 refurbished. The cost of the project is more than 5 million euro.

The ‘Cosmos’ intersection has always been unsafe. Accidents occurred regularly due to left-turning vehicles crossing the through traffic. It was also extremely unsafe for bicyclists to negotiate the heavy and frequently truck traffic. To allow the traffic to flow better in the future, the client opted for a roundabout with bicycle tunnels. This roundabout is equipped with two lanes and bypasses to ensure a smooth traffic flow. Of course, the roundabout has been adapted to the turning radius of the many trucks that are required to pass through this intersection.

To guarantee the safety of bicyclists, they are kept out of the roundabout's traffic. They can smoothly pass through the intersection via new bicycle tunnels. The roundabout has been elevated to accommodate the bicycle tunnels. Thus, bicyclists are able to continue to cycle at the same level. This results in greater safety, a more comfortable bicycling experience and improved visibility in the bicycle tunnels.

Willemen Infra - the largest Belgian road construction company - came into being on 1 July 2018 as a result of the merger between Aswebo, Aannemingen Van Wellen and the infrastructure department of Kumpen.
