N31 - Bruges

The Bruges Expressway (N31) combines different traffic types. The confluence of through and local traffic, heavy and light transport creates conflicts. To overcome these traffic difficulties, work is in hand to reorganize several intersections along the N31. This reorganization aims at a three-effect:
- Improving road safety
- Smoother traffic flow
- Improving quality of life along the N31 and connecting roads

The intersections with the Koningin Astridlaan and the Wittemolenstraat have already been remodelled. These works were carried out by ASWEBO working with NV Depret.
ASWEBO has also been awarded the next two intersections (with Legeweg and the Koning Albert I-laan).

The execution deadlines for both category 8 works were 300 days for the Legeweg intersection and 360 days for the Koning Albert-I Laan intersection.

Intersection with the Legeweg

At this junction, the N31 runs below the intersection, separating out through traffic from local traffic.

Above ground is a two-lane roundabout for traffic switching to and from the N31 and Legeweg. For drivers coming from the Expressway, the roundabout is accessible via parallel roads.

For cyclists, above-ground two-way cycle tracks provide access to the roundabout. At the roundabout itself are two-way crossing points. Single-direction cycle paths are laid along both the Legeweg and on both sides of the N31.

Intersection with the Koning Albert-I Laan

This intersection has already been partially adapted in the past. With the new project, the traffic problem is addressed in full.
As at the Legeweg junction, the N31 is led under the interchange.

The roundabout for traffic switching to and from the N31 and the Koning Albert I-Laan will also be equipped with two lanes.

A 'fork bridge' has been built for cyclists and pedestrians. This raised crossing provides access towards downtown Bruges and in the other direction to Loppem along the Koning-Albert I Laan and to Sint-Andries along the N31. This gives cyclists and hikers safe access to the KHBO college campus and the Kinepolis cinema complex.

Willemen Infra - the largest Belgian road construction company - came into being on 1 July 2018 as a result of the merger between Aswebo, Aannemingen Van Wellen and the infrastructure department of Kumpen.
