Rehabilitation of the Cokerie site - Flémalle

At the end of November 2013, SPAQuE completed the rehabilitation of the ‘Cokerie Flémalle’ site on the territories of the City of Seraing and the municipality of Flémalle.Through this rehabilitation, this 7.6 hectare site, straddling the border of Seraing and Flémalle will be ready to be reintegrated into the economic circuit. Ideally located along the River Meuse, the railway and close to the motorway, the site will be home to a 6.5 hectare trimodal water-rail-road logistics platform.
Five years of work, 310,000 tons of contaminated soil and 8,500 tons of cyanide-laden earth excavated and treated.

Back in 1922, a first coking plant was erected on the eastern part of the 'Cokerie Flémalle' site. A second was added to the west in 1950. Both facilities were closed in 1984 and demolished in the ‘90s. The first examinations of the soil of this particularly contaminated site were undertaken by SPAQuE in 2001 and 2002. Numerous pollutants were identified there, including cyclic hydrocarbons, mineral oils, benzene, cyanide, heavy metals, pure state tar, etc., with soil and groundwater concentrations at times one thousand times higher than permissible standards. In 2008, SPAQuE conducted a first stage of work to the north-west of the site: 8,500 tons of cyanide-polluted soil were evacuated to approved treatment centres. From 2008 to 2009, in a second stage, 122,000 m³ of polluted backfill were removed from 3.5 hectares of the elevated south-western part of the site.  Finally, between 2011 and 2013, in a third stage directed by SPAQuE, the backfill excavated in the previous stage was removed and treated. The polluted soil from the rest of the site (310,000 tons), in particular that from "hotspots" extending up to 7 metres deep, was excavated and then removed to approved treatment centres.
