Viaduct B401 - Ghent

Description

Remediation of the superstructure of the B401 viaduct to Ghent-Centre, including the Ledeberg entrance/exit, and the section spanning the railway line and the River Scheldt. The items most needing attention on the viaduct were the defective bridge joints, faulty drainage and the damage to the cantilevers owing to water seepage along the bluestone capstone and the service path. The new road structure consists of a single-layer waterproofing membrane topped by a protective/ profiling layer. The handrails, safety shock absorbers, water drainage and public lighting masts were replaced. Given the viaduct's location and the extent of the work, a high degree of traffic obstruction was to be expected during the works. To limit the inconvenience, the renovation was carried out in several phases. The works involving the greatest obstruction to traffic were undertaken during the summer from July to September, including the building industry vacation period.

  • Phase 1: Traffic in both directions limited to a single lane between the entrances and exits to and from the St. Lievenslaan and Zuidpark. Through a break made in the central reservation, a single carriageway was used for both directions.
  • Phase 2: Closure of the central section in a southerly direction (both directions, both lanes). Closure of 2 left-hand lanes on the section over the railway and Scheldt (both directions). Traffic able to pass through the Ledeberg entrance and exit. No traffic possible between the entrances and exits to and from the St. Lievenslaan and Zuidpark.
  • Phase 3: B401 totally closed. Both the central section in the direction of the Zuidpark and the entrances and exits closed. Traffic diverted (R4, B402, Destelbergen, N43, N60).
  • Phase 4: Closure of Ledeberg exit and right hand lane over the rail track and Scheldt in the direction of Ledeberg. Traffic able to flow through the central section and Ledeberg entrance.
  • Phase 5: Closure of Ledeberg entrance and right hand lane over the rail track and Scheldt in the direction of N17. Traffic able to flow through the central section and Ledeberg exit.
